Your best employees are threatening to leave? What really keeps them

🛡️ 1. Security: a protected employee is a loyal employee

Health insurance has become one of the most valued workplace benefits in Kenya. Employees are willing to accept slightly lower pay in exchange for medical cover that protects their families . The fear of medical bills is a constant stress. When another employer offers health insurance, the decision to leave becomes easy . Plus, the cost of replacing an employee can exceed several months of their salary . Health insurance is therefore a profitable investment for the business.

💬 2. Recognition: not just words

The "invisible employee syndrome" is a silent career killer. Brilliant employees deliver results week after week, never recognised, never consulted, never asked how they're doing. One day, they leave for a place where they're treated like human beings . A simple thank-you message, a mention in a meeting, a small personalised gesture. These actions cost 0 KES and are worth more than a raise.

📈 3. Growth: without prospects, they leave

Ambitious talent wants to learn. No training, no mentorship, no challenging assignments? They update their CV within 3 months . Give them a project from start to finish. Offer them an hour of internal training each week. Show them you're investing in their future, not just their current skills. Unlike large corporates, SMEs offer unique visibility and responsibility .

🎯 4. A mission, not just a position

Gen Z and Millennials want purpose. Kenyan SMEs that create an inclusive culture, a positive work atmosphere, and offer development opportunities position themselves as employers of choice . Tell them why their work matters. Show them the impact of their actions. An employee who understands their mission is an employee who stays.

⚖️ 5. A manager who protects and develops

The Kenyan legal framework requires fair procedures before any disciplinary action (Employment Act, Section 41) . A manager must not confuse authority with leadership. They have no right to humiliate or treat subordinates as mere executors . A good manager is one who protects, develops, and lifts their teams.

Tip: Engagement isn't built in a day. Laddar Africa's study shows that agent turnover in Kenya averages 44% . And 70% of employees decide to stay or leave within their first 45 days . Onboarding and integration are critical.

Do it now: Tomorrow, take 15 minutes for an individual "check-in" with your best employee. Not to discuss performance, but to ask: "What motivates you to get up in the morning?" Listen. Without judgment.
