You ask a bad question, you get a bad answer. The golden rule of prompting

Here's the golden rule of prompting and 3 concrete examples to transform your conversations with AI:

🧠 The golden rule: be specific, give context, and define the format

A good prompt = role + context + task + format.

  • Bad prompt: "Give me ideas for my business."
  • Good prompt: "You are a strategy consultant for SMEs in Kenya. My business sells chapatis and samosas wholesale to kiosks in Nairobi. Give me 5 ideas to increase my sales by 20% this month, with a budget of KES 10,000. Present them as a list with estimated cost and expected ROI."

🛍️ Example 1: Save time on your marketing

Prompt: "Draft a WhatsApp Business post to announce a 3-day promotion on my chapatis. I'm offering 1 dozen free for 5 dozen purchased. Audience: mothers buying for their families in my Kawangware neighbourhood. Tone: warm and direct. Length: 200 words. Include a call to action with my number: 0712 345 678."

Result: A ready-to-send message that speaks to your audience and converts.

📊 Example 2: Make better financial decisions

Prompt: "I'm a trader in Mombasa. My sales last month: KES 150,000. My expenses: rent 25,000, salaries 40,000, purchases 60,000, electricity 8,000, transport 7,000. Calculate my net margin. Compare it to the Kenyan SME average (15-20%). Give me 3 concrete recommendations to improve it in 30 days. Present as a table with estimated benefit per action."

Result: A clear diagnosis and priority actions. You just saved a consultant's fee.

📈 Example 3: Anticipate the impact of new laws

Prompt: "I'm a restaurant owner in Kisumu. The Finance Act 2026 imposes VAT on digital payment fees. My customers pay 70% via M-Pesa. My M-Pesa commission is KES 15,000/month. Estimate the impact on my margin. Propose 3 strategies to reduce this impact. One must be a customer behaviour change. One must be an internal process change. One must be a loyalty offer."

Result: AI analyses, quantifies, and proposes. You move from panic to action.

Tip: Prepare your prompts in advance. Keep a file of your "winning prompts." Every time a prompt works, save it and reuse it. That's your intellectual capital.

Do it now: Open ChatGPT or your AI of choice. Write a prompt using the golden rule (role + context + task + format). Ask it a real business question. Compare the answer with what you'd have gotten from a vague prompt. The difference is spectacular.
