Electricity at Sh 70 per kWh? These tips reduce your bill by 30%

💡 1. Switch to off-peak hours (TOU) and pay half the price

Kenya Power's Time-of-Use (TOU) tariff offers discounted windows at night and on weekends. During off-peak hours, electricity can cost up to half the price (around Sh 10.54 vs Sh 21.08 at peak) . If your processes allow (bakeries, cold rooms, pumps, EV charging), schedule them in these windows. Even a simple timer on your equipment can make a difference .

☀️ 2. Solar without upfront cost: lease-to-own

Solar financing programmes for SMEs are multiplying in Kenya, aligned with Vision 2030 and the National Energy Compact 2025–2030 . With a lease-to-own model, you install solar panels with no upfront payment, repay over time, and own the system at the end. Electricity costs become predictable and often lower than what you pay KPLC . Providers like Safer Power Group already operate 100% green off-grid factories in Kenya, and decentralised solutions (rooftop solar, mini-grids) reduce SME operating costs .

🔧 3. Silent leaks costing you 15% of your bill

Poor power factor leads to surcharges on your Kenya Power bill. Installing power factor correction capacitors can reduce your bill by up to 15% . In industries, compressed air leaks can represent up to 30% of energy consumption. An ultrasonic leak detection audit locates and seals them . In a Kenyan tea factory, simple actions (insulation, steam leak repairs, switching off unnecessary lights) reduced electricity consumption by 25% .

💡 4. Small actions that add up

Switch to LED bulbs. LED lighting consumes up to 60% less energy . Use natural light as much as possible. Unplug appliances on standby: your TV and hi-fi consume power even when off . For fridges, avoid overfilling and don't place them too close to the wall to allow air circulation . These simple actions, combined, can significantly reduce your bill.

Tip: Large companies must conduct energy audits every 4 years from 2025. You can do the same at lower cost. Call a licensed Energy Service Company (ESCO) to identify your leaks. The investment pays back quickly.

Do it now: Tomorrow, list your three biggest electrical appliances. Calculate their running hours. Shift heavy operations (oven, washing machine, pump) to evening after 10pm. One hour of planning = thousands of shillings saved per year.
